Athlete Activism 

 

Mass movements of protests—public marches, boycotts, sit-ins, rallies, campus take-overs, petition drives, teach-ins, and demonstrations—have raised critical awareness and actively worked toward dismantling oppressive systems. Among those who raised their level of consciousness and demonstrated a capacity to organize and help sustain already established freedom movements were often times Black athletes, who believed that justice could be achieved through political change—a tradition that continues today.
